Over the course of the growing season, we aim to provide motivated candidates with the knowledge and skills needed to manage an community based educational livestock farm.  In exchange, apprentices perform the day-to-day tasks that help keep the farm running. Apprenticeships are hard work with long hours, but include the invaluable benefit of observing, learning and taking part in the inner workings of a farm and a stipend and housing are provided on this beautiful farm. Apprentices are engaged in every aspect of the operation from the incubators to the dairy processing room to the farm stand and are expected to follow instructions and complete tasks in a timely manner. Apprentices report directly to the Farmer Brie, but will also have opportunities to work with the livestock and creamery manager and to interact with all our farm animals. The apprentice crew plays a vital role for the farm to meet production goals throughout the growing season.

We have 4 positions starting in April and lasting into November. Generally the start dates are staggered throughout April & May and the end dates are staggered from early October until Thanksgiving.

QUALIFICATIONS

At Terra Firma Farm, we strive to build a team of reliable, enthusiastic, motivated, hard working, and dedicated farmers for a successful apprenticeship. Previous farm experience is preferred but not required. If you do have past experience, it’s important to be open to the way we do things, as opposed to other farms you have worked on. We are looking for people who can work quickly and efficiently, but who are also careful and able to take direction, along with constructive criticism, and can follow through with tasks until completion.  It is essential that you can work independently and with others equally well. Respect, openness, and good communication are expected when one is a member of our team. Farm work varies with the season, but is often repetitive and can be physically and mentally demanding.  Being able to lift heavy objects, bend over repeatedly, and be on your feet most of the day is necessary to this job. Apprentices are required to possess the proper clothing and footwear to be prepared to work in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, intensely hot sun, wind, and bitter cold without complaint.  Life on the farm is not always predictable, and apprentices are expected to be flexible to accommodate various production goals, such as working late to complete a critical harvest. Our season runs from the beginning of April into early November and we need people who are willing to commit to most of the season. There will be a two week trial period at the beginning of employment. If both the crops manager and apprentice agree to continue the work arrangement after this two week period, the apprentice will sign a contract to commit to the arranged time frame
