Guidelines for Use & Respecting our Farm

Terra Firma Farm relies upon volunteer labor to further our mission of reconnecting our community to agriculture.  Thousands of hours are donated by individuals, families, and groups who plant, weed, and harvest vegetables; help maintain our buildings and fields; and help to socialize and care for our animals.  We encourage both individuals and groups to come help out on the farm!!

Terra Firma Farm also welcomes individual students looking to fulfill community service hours.  Children of all ages are welcome with adult supervision.

Terra Firma Farm gladly accepts group volunteers from schools, businesses, religious congregations and other organizations.  We begin to welcome groups to the farm in late-April and continue working groups right through October.  The tasks that groups perform are specific to the group size as well as the season they visit.  If you would like to set up a group volunteer day at Terra Firma Farm please email brianne@terrafirmafarm.  Please include approximate dates of request as well as number of volunteers.

It's easy to get started volunteering at the farm- just drop us an email or give us a call!!  You don't have to know farming, and you don't have to bring your own tools.  We'll orient you to the day's work, and you can spend as much or as little time as you want helping out.

When:  We currently have regular volunteer hours the first Saturday & Sunday of the month (April through November) from 9:00am to noon.  We frequently have other hours as well, and can often accommodate the scheduling needs of groups or individuals, so please call if these are no convenient times.

What will I be doing??:  There are quite a number of tasks involved in growing vegetables, including planting, transplanting, weeding and harvesting.  There are also quite a number of tasks involved in caring for our livestock, including barn work, socialization, daily chores and feeding.  Reclaiming 20 acres of farmland also offers many special field projects as well!!'

What to wear:  The farm is not formal!!  Prepare to get dirty!  Jeans and a T-shirt are a popular combination and shoes or sneakers that you won't mind getting dirty.  We highly recommend wearing sunscreen to help keep off the sun!!

Non fieldwork volunteer opportunities are also available year round.  Please email brianne@terrafirmafarm to set up a volunteer date.

Terra Firma Farm Hosts United Way Day of Caring

Hundreds of volunteers made a difference in June for United Way's Day of Caring.  Many thanks to the participating companies, agencies and volunteers who got involved in their community -- it's what matters.  We at Terra Firma Farm felt honored and lucky to have such caring & hard working volunteers for our first year of participation.

We had over 70 volunteers from Pfizer, Monsanto and Electric Boat here at the farm.  Volunteers helped to paint our barn, plant grass, build a pig fence and pig hut.  Some planted a herb garden while others a children's Pizza Garden.  Others moved rocks and pulled weeds, planted grass seed, built a chicken run.  Some spent the entire day in the garden while others were in the woods, barns and fields!  The amount of work done on these volunteer days was amazing!  Thank you to our Volunteers- you were great!!
